OVERVIEW OF THE CHURCH

Our Lady of Assumption

The Assumption of Mary into Heaven, The Catholic Church teaches that the Virgin Mary "having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory". The Assumption is a major feast day, commonly celebrated on 15 August.

Syro-Malabar Church

The church of St. Thomas Christians is an Apostolic Church founded in India by St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Christ. According to ancient, strong and continuous traditions, St. Thomas landed at Kodungalloor (Muziris) in Kerala in 52 A.D.

ST.Thomas Cross

This is one of the two earliest available material witnesses to the presence of Christianity in India in the early Christian era. Remnant of the ancient wooden cross at St. Mary’s Forane Church, Pallippuram, near Cherthala, in the Alappuzha district of Kerala, India.

CHURCH HISTORY

Pallippuram St.Marys Forane church is the first church in Asia in the name of Our Lady of Assumption. It is traditionally believed that, the church is established in 52 AD and The Cross that St. Thomas erected at Kokkamangalam, is the base of this church.

 

Miracoulus Mother Mary

Icon of Madonna and the Infant Jesus, at the centre of the main altar; tempera and gold on wood, date and author unknown; believed to be connected with the portraits by St. Luke and to have been brought from Europe.

Pallippuram Seminary

Pallippuram Seminary is the the first Seminary (1795 - 1841) ran by the St. Thomas Christians. The seminary was founded by Palackal Thoma Malpan in 1795 in Pallippuram, Cherthala, in Allappuzha, Kingdom of Travancore.

Palackal Thoma Malpan

Pallippuram Palackal Thoma Malpan (1780- 1841) was an illustrious secular priest from the Syro - Malabar Church then under the Vicariate-Apostolic of Verapoly and later under the Archdiocese of Ernakulam

St. Kuriaksoe Elias Chavara

St.Kuriakose Elias Chavara (1801 - 1875) is the first canonised male saint of Indian origin and belongs to the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church. He entered the Pallippuram seminary in 1818 and also served here as a priest.
